This week, I was back at the alternate housing site but this time I was with Laura and Haeley. We ended up all three cohosting one group. Our group was from Michigan and what we had learned about our Michigan groups is that they were always late and this one was no exception. They had a long drive so it was understandable! One of the kids was already in the Philly area so his mom dropped him off around 5pm (which is when the group was supposed to be there) so us hosts got to hang out with him and get to know him until the rest of the group showed up at 9pm. Haeley, Laura, and I had to improvise our orientation because we were sharing our housing site with a group from a different organization so it was difficult, but we're pretty good at our jobs so we rocked it anyway. Instead of our usual dinner at our usual Indian restaurant followed by cultural orientation, we had regular orientation and then ordered pizza to eat which was actually REALLY good. Us hosts met with the group leaders and got all of the serving groups set up for the week and then it was time for us all to hit the hay.
I'm not going to go into detail about all of the ministry sites we visited but there is one in particular I want to talk about. It's called Honickman Learning Center. It's an amazing program that helps kids keep learning even through the summer. It's like a cool summer school program pretty much. There's a woman who works there named Ms. Chris. I felt like I was meeting a celebrity when I met her because every week on our prayer tour, we listen to some tracks of people telling us about their heart for ministry and their heart for Philly and she has not only one track, but two. Basically, she's legit. It was just amazing for my group to get to meet and work with her and then hear her tracks on the prayer tour. It helped make what the tracks were talking about seem more real and it made them more excited. Honickman is a great place and has a great staff; Ms. Chris is just one of many who pour so much into helping students excel! I will definitely be keeping them in my prayers.
My group this week was awesome. The van rides were CRAZY, these kids were so loud but they kept me on my toes. My leaders, AJ and Emily, were pretty great too. Coming off of last week where we started with getting the van towed, I was not as confident in my abilities as I had been before so it was hard. BUT they were so good to me and really encouraging and everything. There weren't any really crazy things that happened this week; it was pretty chill. I really appreciated it too. I was able to connect with some of the students from that group because there weren't any major issues. It was a nice relaxing week.
Because it was so chill, I just got to spend a lot of quality time with Jesus which is awesome.
Week 5 is an exciting one so stay tuned ;)
